The purpose of the feast is to get rid of old plants and start a new cycle of growth in the farms. It is also to get people together to celebrate a new harvest year, and nurture the community's spirit through festivals and spectacles such as Wrestling.
The New Yam Festival of the Igbo is a harvest festival practiced mainly in West Africa, particularly in Nigeria and Ghana. It symbolizes the conclusion of the harvest, and the beginning of the next work cycle. It also ties individual Igbo communities together as being dependent on agriculture, yams being a particularly important crop of the region.

There is also spiritual meaning tied to the festival in that they honor the earth goddess and ancestral spirits by making offerings of harvested Yams before any New Yams could be eaten.

It is mainly a tradition-based celebration of the "season of plenty-- the new year."
