There were many who would not have been able to define their own religion except to say that it wasn't any longer the faith they had been brought up in. It no longer fit with their concept of what they believed. They had grown beyond tnat point and were seeking answers. There were many former Puritans who had been exiled. There were Quakers who were shunned. There were Dutch Reformed who no longer fit into their community and Anglicans on the outs with their clergy and the new protestant faiths like the Baptists. No one religion fit them all and no one religion was designated.

Those who wanted religion could choose any religion and those who did not want religion were not required to have a religion.
