After the Berrima was commissioned as HMAS Berrima in August 1914, it left Sydney on the nineteenth of that month. On September 9, 1914, it stopped at Rossel Island, Papua New Guinea. On September 11, 1914, it landed at Herbertshoehe (now Kokopo), German New Guinea (now Papua New Guinea). On September 12, 1914, it landed at Rabaul (formerly Simpsonhafen), Papua New Guinea). On September 24, 1914, it landed near Madang, New Guinea, Indonesia. The rest of the war it spent transporting troops to the Middle East before being hit by a torpedo in the English Channel.
