The British were watching to see if Lee would succeed in invading the North. If so, they were ready to give the Confederacy official recognition, and send military aid.

The unexpected Northern win at Antietam put that plan on the back-burner, and meanwhile gave Lincoln the opportunity to issue his Emancipation Proclamation, making it impossible for any foreign power to help the South without looking pro-slavery.

It was a Union victory, largely accidental, that had not been expected by anyone, including the British who were treating this campaign as the test of Confederate viability, in advance of granting recognition and sending aid.

This victory gave Lincoln the credibility to issue his Emancipation Proclamation, turning the war into an official crusade against slavery. This meant that free nations abroad could no longer help the South without looking pro-slavery themselves.

Overseas support was never likely after this, and the Confederates realised they would have to go it alone.

Significance of the Battle of Antietam

Union troops found a bundle of cigars with a note that told Less's exact location that a messenger had lost. One day later Lee found out about this and retreated, but before he could escape Gen. George McClellan launched a massive attack and Lee returned to the safety of North Virginia. Lincoln used this event to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
