Ended the old three party system and began the fourth partysystem. It was a transformation of issues focusing on the American Civil War, Reconstruction, race and monetery issues. It began in severe depression of 1893 to 1896. It includes the progressive era, WW1 and the start of the great depression.

During the period for which popular vote records are available (1824-present), 1936 was the first time that a U. S. presidential candidate received over 90% of the electoral votes AND over 60% of the popular votes. In the 37 elections before 1936, only four Presidents won with over 90% of the electoral votes, George Washington in 1792, Thomas Jefferson in 1804, James Monroe in 1820 and Abraham Lincoln in 1864.

1936 was also the first U. S. presidential/ vice presidential election in which the winners would be sworn in on January 20 instead of March 4, the date of Inauguration Day having been changed upon ratification of the 20th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution about four years earlier.
