Both had a large nuclear arsenal. Both had the largest military forces in the world. Both had the habit of supporting dictatorships around the world. America supported right wing fascist dictatorships and the Soviet Union supported Left leaning dictatorships (which it itself was). In supporting these dictatorships both had a hand (either directly or indirectly) in the slaughter of millions of people worldwide. Both had sophisticated Intelligence services that monitored their own civilian populations and monitored populations abroad. That's all I can think of right now but I'm sure there is more.

After the defeat of Nazi Germany, both countries sought to consolidate their perceived gains of war.
Both countries became expert in all aspects of covert warfare and executed a "cold war" worldwide for nearly 40 years.
The defeat of the Axis in World War II and the subsequent cold war has been the greatest event to influence human history for the past century and will continue to impact history for the foreseable future.
Literally hundreds of thousand of books, research papers, policy papers, dogmatic theory and spy thrillers have been written on this subject.
