No. Its not. Not by far.

To four significant digits, conversion ratios are as followed:
0.4536 kilograms = 1 pound
2.204 pounds = 1 kilogram

Now, there are three different kinds of tons you could be referring to.
The Short Ton: 2000 US pounds
The Long Ton: 2240 US pounds
The Metric Ton: 1000 Kilograms = 2204 pounds

1 Kilogram is obviously only about twice the weight of 1 pound (based on the first set of conversion ratios)
1 pound is obviously smaller than 1 ton (based on the second set of conversion ratios) by far more than twice.

Which ton: American or British (2240lbs)? The metric one is the "tonne", not "ton" (French and to distinguish it from the pounds-based tons)

1 short ton = 0.907 tonne

1 long tone = 1.106 tonne.

There are several weights called "ton" in use. These are (with the equivalent weight in kilograms):

  • Long ton = 1016 kg
  • Short ton = 907.2 kg
  • Metric ton (tonne) =1000 kg

So a metric ton is bigger than a short ton as used in the US and smaller than the long ton used in the UK.
