Several mistakes have been suggested:

  1. He did not demand the entry of Spain on the side of the Axis.
  2. He stopped air superiority bombing in favor of terror bombing in England.
  3. He delayed his invasion of the Soviet Union to invade the Balkans and help out Italy in its failed invasion of Greece.
  4. He underestimated the manpower and resiliency of the Soviet Union (a big mistake).
  5. He diverted assets from the drive on Moscow in 1941 and did not take it.
  6. In the 1942 offensive he split his forces in an attempt to take two strategic objectives: Stalingrad and the Caucasus. He made the problem worse by diverting forces from Stalingrad to the Caucasus.
  7. He refused to let his encircled 6th army try to break out of Stalingrad.
  8. He did not require Japan to declare war on USSR in return for Germany declaring war on the US (another big mistake).
  9. He did not suspect that the Western powers had cracked his communication codes until it was too late.
  10. He was late in sending sufficient troops soon enough to Rommel in Africa. When he did send large numbers, it was too late and he lost them all.
  11. He often did not follow the advice of his General Staff, particularly in regard to ceding territory to gain room for maneuver.
  12. He did not commit all his available panzer divisions to the defense of Normandy quickly enough.
  13. He did not put Germany on a total war economy until 1942 or even 1943.
  14. He did not put enough resources into the development of an atomic bomb.
  15. He chose major allies that were of little use to him.

At a time when Hitler was on the cusp of defeating England, for no apparent reason and against the advice of his Generals, he suddenly deployed his military resources from England and attacked Russia without first having conquering England.

This provided the British a chance to re-group and in addition, Hitler was now faced with a war on both his Western & Eastern fronts. Hitler rarely relied on the advice of many of his great Generals and because of this, Hitler had made several mistakes over & above having attached Russia at a time when the Nazis and the Russians were not at war with one another. This was Hitler's most costly mistake.

he was in charge.

This is a stupid answer obviously posted by a complete numbskull.

Stalin's overwhelming mistake was to ignore all the signs of impending war by Germany. There were ample reports from his own espionage service and outside reporters that German troops were massing on the borders of the USSR, but he was either in denial or he deliberately ignored them for political purposes (probably the former as he almost suffered a complete mental breakdown following the German invasion).

In the early days, Stalin would often override the opinions of his generals, although he soon learnt his lesson when confronted openly by General Zhukov. Zhukov was ultimately allowed to conduct the war on his terms from the battle of Kursk to the battle for Berlin.

Stalin's ultimate mistake was to delay declaring war on Japan. Had he adopted a more aggressive policy he could well have taken over much of Manchuria to the detriment of China - Stalin was always a sucker for expanding the borders of the USSR.

It is worth noting that for all his moral failings Stalin was probably the most intelligent ruler that Russia ever had (Chernenko probably being the thickest).

Abandoning Operation Sea Lion (attack on Great Britain) and then starting Operation Barbarossa (invasion of the Soviet Union). This put Germany in a two-front war. Declaring war on the U.S. was another mistake of Germany's.

On a day of invading Russia Hittler sent his troops on the coldest day possible. Some belive that it was his own Doctor Who made this happen with him always giving Hitler drugs nobody still knows why he ever did that. But the soldiers were to weak to defend themsels due to frost bites and sick from the cold which right then they were defeated.

Several, biggest being starting a two front war by invading the Soviet Union. Going to Italy's aid during their ill fated invasion of Greece was also a mistake because it delayed his own invasion plans of the Soviet Union by several months, forcing them to fight in the Russian winter (which only the Russians seem to be able to fight in). Launching the Battle of Britain before he had consolidated his conquest of continental Europe was also a mistake. It scary to think that if Hitler had put on the brakes after the fall of France, left the British alone, and waited a few years before he invaded the Soviet Union the Third Reich might have lasted far longer than it did.

In technical terms, it wasn't Adolf Hitler's costliest mistake but people say it was Hitler's costliest mistake because that was when Hitler invaded the USSR, this then brought the USSR into World War 2 fully. Hitler made several costly mistakes after Operation Barbarossa, the main one is that he launched case blue and continued the advance into the Soviet Union.
