JOHN DEERe invented the self-polishing (scouring) steel plow. This invention made it much easier for farmers to plow the loamy, sod of the Midwest. John Deere was also a blacksmith by trade and had a very inventive mind.
John Deere the company has invented many products over the years, varying from cotton picking machines to GreenStar GPS systems. For the 'rest of the story' see the related link...
He made the the the the first self polishing plow(made entirely from polished steel so it was lighter). Contrary to common belief, John Deere did not invent the first steel tipped plow (many manufacturers already made cast iron plows and some of the first plows were even made of wood with a steel plating on the moldboard and the share of the plow).
The steel plow as definitely his biggest invention but I'm sure there were many others. Working as a blacksmith, I sure there were many implements and tools he built himself for farmers. The company itself also boasts many inventions (including everything from three row equipment (cultivators, planters, etc.) to the thermo-siphon cooling system which was used extensively on early John Deere tractors). There is not master list of all of John Deere's invention but if there was, it would be pretty long.

The self scouring plow made out of a broken sawmill blade. This plow helped prairie farmers turn over the thick gumbo soil of the Midwest.
