I remember being a rep at CompUSA when it first came out. It was NOT the first mp3 player. They had been around for a few years prior. First reactions from the 'geek' crowd was that it was very simple to use/sync. It wasn't until the adoption started spreading that it became the icon it is today.

When the telephone first came out in public, people regarded it as a toy. Some were also afraid that other people can listen in on their telephone conversations, or that the sounds from coming from it could make a person deaf or crazy.

My first reaction was, "Why is that man talking to himself so loudly?"

At first the phones were so bulky and expensive that no-one really had one. (If you watch the old "Lethal Weapon" movies there is a scene with a mobile phone that was awesome by 1980s standards, but now it looks like a suitcase! :)

My reaction now is, "Turn that stupid ringer off. No-one wants to hear your stupid ringtone or your stupid conversation."

I have gotten such a bad attitude that I will start filling in the missing half of the conversation, like the person on the phone is talking to me -- it can be a lot of fun in a long line-up! :D

I heard that when the telephone was invented it was thought to be a tool of deviation. People believed it to be of the devil. Christians would not allow one in their homes reasoning it was unnatural to be able to talk thru a wire in the same way a witch or sorcerer talked to the dead
