The election was actually held in 1800. While the popular vote was a huge victory for Thomas Jefferson, the electoral college ended up a tie between Jefferson and Aaron Burr. The election was then divided by the House of Representatives, with each state giving one vote. Many of the small states were dominated by Federalists and these had poor regard for Jefferson and worse for Burr. After an agonizing week of lobbying and repeated votes, Jefferson became President and Burr, Vice President. Burr later fought a famous duel with Alexander Hamilton, who was the leading Federalist of the time.
