Roman temples were similar to Greek temple. The temples were there to worship gods that were also similar to the Greek gods, except for the difference sin the names. The Roman temples were also constructed in a way not too different from Greek temples.

Each temple was dedicated to a particular god or two or three related gods (apart from the pantheon which was a type of temple dedicated to all gods). The Romans performed rituals in honour of the god or gods the temple was dedicated to. The rituals varied according to the myths and traditions associated with the particular god or gods in question. All rituals started with various types of sacrifices to honour of the gods and to appease them. Among other things, the sacrifices prevented the wrath of the gods which would occur if they were not honoured. The temples were all over the city. Their construction was funded with the spoils of war.

There were many religious festivals each year. They were scheduled in the Roman calendar. This scheduling was supervised by the Pontifex Maximus, the head of Roman state religion, because the dates of some festivals varied due to certain religious procedures.
