The biggest achievements of the congress under the Articles of Confederation were winning the War for Independence, negotiating the subsequent peace treaty, and passing the Northwest Ordinance.

The Articles of Confederation was important because it formed a loose alliance between the states of America to come together in time of need or attack to protect themselves, it also helped to unify the colonist to some degree.

Under the Articles of Confederation the American colonists fought and defeated Great Britain and gained independence. By the end of the "Confederation era," Congress had created a bureaucracy to administer the day-to-day affairs of the government. The issue over the western lands was solved under the Articles. The large states holding vast amounts of western land ceded the land to the government under the Articles so that all the states could share in the wealth of those lands. The Northwest Ordinances were passed that provided for the creation of equal, self governing states in the Northwest Territories and the newly created states would have the same rights and privileges as the original 13 states. Congress also provided for a survey of the western lands to prepare the land for sale to all.

The accomplishments that resulted in the Articles of Confederation were the colonies formed a new government. This government was unlike the British government, the people had a say in what they were going to do. The Articles of Confederation also had many strenghs and weaknesses. Some strenghths were: they were able to handle the western and northwestern lands. And the weaknesses were: the congress needed to pay a large debt to many people.

There were two major problems that were addressed in the Articles were: The fear of a strong national government. States behaved like their own "country" and all eligible voters had a voice, so the election of repersenatives was closer to the people. The national government created was WEAK it was only a central legislature, the Confederation Congress. there was no executive (president/cabinet) or Judicial branch (supreme court) most legal disputes were handled in state courts. Each state retains its sovereignty, freedoms, and independence, and every Power, jurisdiction, and right, which is not by this confederation expressly delegated to the United Sates, in Congress assembled. The fear that some states would have more power than others in a national government. So each state had one repersenative(ONE vote) in the Confederation Congress. BUT on important matters like declaring war- nine states would have to agree. This was done to insure that the 7 small states could not outvote 6 larger states.

Under the Articles, the states were held together until a new government under the Constitution was created. The new nation began to emerge as one respecting the ideas that had caused the Revolutionary War in the first place.
