War with Japan The immediate after effect of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was to reduce American military effectiveness on the Pacific. This enabled the Japanese to seize the various colonies of the Americans, plus those of the various European nations (France, Britain, Netherlands). The attack cemented already simmering American prejudice against the Japanese in a twisted and racist fashion. America violated its own laws and began forcing Japanese-Americans into concentration camps. American forces attacking Japanese units in the Pacific rarely took prisoners, preferring to kill almost 100% of them instead. Granted, the Japanese were not prone to surrender, but typical Pacific island battles generated about one half of one percent POWs out of total Japanese defense forces. Had the Americans wanted POWs you'd have seen higher numbers than that just from the Japanese knocked out by concussion or with limbs blown off/in a coma. Much has been made of the sorry treatment American POWs received at the hands of the Japanese, but at least the Japanese saw fit to take a few POWs. American Marines took a steady number of trophies (ears, genitals, etc) from Japanese soldiers. American bombers used incendiaries in wholesale attacks on Japanese civilian targets. The entire affair culminated in the only use of an atomic weapon in human history, not just once, but twice. " Nearing the end of the war, the American Admiral 'Bull' Halsey was quoted as saying that after the war, 'Japanese would only be spoken in hell'." (Thomas) This about summed up America's reaction to Pearl Harbor.

Their success at Pearl Harbor could only lead to cautious elation. Caution in that the US Carriers were at sea, and that the industrial might of the US would now be jump started. Elation in that surprise had been achieved and the Fleet's response to other attacks would surely be delayed.

The attack on Pearl Harbor drew the U.S. into the war against Japan, which was ultimately highly destructive to Japan in human lives lost, destruction to Japan's economy and society, to say nothing of the nuclear bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. However, it also paved the way for the "benevolent" U.S. occupation that brought democracy, women's rights, and stability to Japan so that it would become the economic and technological power it is today.

Subsequent to the Pearl Harbor surprise attack of December 7, 1941, Japan successfully attacked British interests in southeast Asia, and occupied the Philippines. From that point on, attacks by the US and its allies (including China) recaptured these areas, gradually destroying the Japanese military. The atomic bombings of two Japanese cities prompted Japan's unconditional surrender in August, 1945.

It energized the US population in a way that wouldn't have happened otherwise. The surprise attack was horrifying and tens of thousands enlisted immediately. It made most of the population realize that they could no longer remain neutral in the conflicts occurring around the world.
