There were numerous reasons that that caused the Reformation: - Ongoing corruption on the part of some clergy and Church leaders (bishops, popes), in spite of several attempts by Church Councils to remedy the problems. - A desire by some to embrace a simpler form of religious worship and a more biblical style of church. - The desire by some Germanic rulers to enrich themselves by taking over the property of Catholic monasteries and convents. - The recent invention of the printing press greatly facilitated the spread of Martin Luther's ideas; although this did not cause the Reformation it may be argued that it is what gave the movement real power. The main cause was the desire of Henry VIII to divorce his wife so he could marry his much younger and more attractive mistress, Ann Boleyn. Henry was desperate to father a son and heir, but believed that his first wife (Catherine of Aragon) was no longer capable of bearing children.

However, Henry wasn't able to get permission from the Pope for a divorce. Henry reasoned that,if England was no longer a Catholic country, he wouldn't need the Pope's permission for a divorce. He therefore declared the Church of England Separate from Rome, with himself as the head instead of the Pope. He then granted himself his own divorce, and married Ann Boleyn.

A secondary reason was that Henry needed money to modernize and enlarge the English army.Henry wanted England to become a major European power, so needed a large, effective military to achieve this. He could get this money by plundering the assets of the Catholic Church in England once the break with Rome had been made. The Catholic Church owned a lot of land (perhaps as much as a third of all land in England),and Catholic churches and monasteries contained many valuable ornaments, objects, and other possessions. All this could be confiscated and sold off to raise money for Henry's military reforms.

Results:

England became a Protestant nation, but this caused social problems both for Henry and his Tudor successors.Catholic states in Europe became automatic enemies, and many ordinary people were uncomfortable with the idea of a forced change from being Catholic to being Protestant. There were also problems with the succession later, as Catholic and Protestant claimants plotted for the throne.

The causes of the English Reformation were:

Money - the dissolution of the monasteries and stopping taxation for the Church going to Rome meant more money for the King and government.

King Henry's want to gain an annulment from his first wife Catherine of Arragon, in order to marry Anne Boleyn instead.

Religion and Corrupt Catholic Church- sometimes overemphasised, the majority of the population were satisfied with their religious life. However, there were issues to do with nepotism, pluralism (clergy employing family members, clergy occupying more than one job), and anabaptists, who were very controversial in their beliefs.

Martin Luther's 95 Theses.

The English Reformation in 16th Century England was a series of events which the Church of England broke away from the authority of the Pope and Catholic Church. The causes of this were the European Protestant Reformation, decline of feudalism and rise of nationalism, rise of common law, invention of the printing press and the increased circulation of The Bible. The results were the Pope and general councils of the church deciding doctrine and church taxes being paid straight to Rome. The Pope also had the final say over the appointment of bishops, and the English monarch became the Supreme Governor and the church of the nation was established.

How did Catherine of Aragon effect the Protestant Reformation?

Catherine of Aragon did not cause the Reformation. The Reformation had already started in Europe. She however was probably a catalyst for the English Reformation however. If she had been able to give birth to a healthy living male heir then Henry VIII would not have decided to break with the Church of Rome to marry Anne Boleyn.
