The scandal began was a break-in into the Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC. The burglars were caught and they were tied to Nixon's re-election campaign. Attempts at a cover-up led to concealment of evidence and obstruction of justice which led to more of the same and reached higher and higher up in the administration.

It was caused because four men, working on President Nixon's behalf, were caught after breaking in to a room in the Watergate Hotel in Washington DC where the Democratic Party had records used in campaigning against Nixon. The scandal was based mostly on how much Nixon knew about this break-in and when he knew it. It is clear that he wanted to cover up his involvement. When Richard Nixon was President, there was a group of 10 people that called themself 'The Committee to RE-Elect the President', or 'CREEP'. They were trying to keep Nixon in office for another term by using legal and illegal methods. The most famous illegal one was, of course, the Watergate Scandal. There is more information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committee_to_Re-elect_the_President and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watergate_Scandal.

The burglary of the Democratic party offices in Washington, D.C started everything.

After the burglars were arrested, many illegal acts were committed in hopes of covering up the connection of the burglars to the Nixon campaign committee and later to hide the President's involvement in the cover-up.

President Nixon didn't just want to win the 1972 presidential election, but he wanted to win it big. He paid burglars to break into the Democratic Headquaters to get information so he could win the re-election. Basically, Watergate happened because Nixon wanted to win so bad that he cheated.
