Rome destroyed Carthage and annexed its territory in present day Tunisia, turning it into the province of Africa. This combined with the other territories she had already taken fro Carthage after the previous wars gave her direct control over much of the western Mediterranean. She controlled the rest of this area through alliances. Rome controlled the western Mediterranean.
