In a family, women were the caretakers of the home while men went to school and, if they were in the upper class, went into politics and the Senate or maybe even the military.

If you're talking about slaves, there's really a 50-50 chance there unless they were taught a certain trade and were then expected to perform it.

Men and women in the Roman world were expected to act according to the standards of their gender. In other words, men were to do masculine things and women were to do feminine things. For example, a man would never even consider weaving at a loom, and a woman would never even consider joining the army. About the worst thing that could be said about a man was that he was effeminate and about a woman was that she were outspoken and aggressive.

Both, gender roles will influence gender identity. the expectations that are place on specific genders which will consequently create the stereotypical gender roles will influence an individual's gender identification.
