Few believed that the Colonies would prove to capable of gaining their independence from England until their victory at Saratoga. France entered the war, and that made it possible to limit England naval threat on the coast. The French scored a Naval Victory at the Chesapeake which in turn led to a colonial win at Yorktown and the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

The American Colonies consisted of a vast continent of wooded and primitive land with few roads and virtually no bridge crossing of the major rivers. The territory size and primitive state hampered English efforts to contain the rebellion.

General George Washington's troops often fought commando style, engaging the British troops from behind trees or stone walls and disappearing into the night before the British could find them. Washington learned this fighting technique from the Indians during his service in the French and Indian war. The British considered this type of fighting cowardly and not at all what one would expect from gentlemen in combat. Thus, the Americans were able to reduce their war casualties by avoiding many open field battles. This was essential since disease and desertion were decimating the American ranks.

Robert Morris of Pennsylvania was instrumental in maintaining some semblance of financial stability for the colonies early in the battle. Without his personal guarantees on many a loan the colonial troops would not have received any pay, food, clothing or weapons. Even with his efforts Washington's army suffered from every kind of deprivation throughout the war.

When the French decided, after the Americans won the battle of Saratoga, to lend their support to our revolution the cause was assured. It didn't happen over night, in fact, it took another five years before hostilities ceased. America was indebted to the HEAD of France, King Louis XVI, unfortunately, America sat by and watched as the Anarchical Mobs of the French Revolution severed his HEAD, via the guillotine.
