After of course the massive number casualities inflicted and the physical ravaging of the nations, the biggest consequence of WW2 was the Soviet Union's occupation of eastern Europe, which allowed the forceful spread of Communism and set the stage for the Cold War, which consumed the next half-century.

A devestating consequense of ww2 was 40 million dead, 20 million of who were Russian. 21 million left homeless in europe. Empires fell as GB and france fell. USA emerged dominant as it had funded WW2 and lead reconstruction. There was no all-inclusive peace settlement, but there were lots of seperate treaties but Russia could not decide about the future of Germany and Austria. Nuclear weapons played a major development of the cold war. The superpowers emerged; USA had A-bomb and Russia had the red army to fill the power vacuum in Eastern Europe. Social changes were made, 10 million Germans had to leave Czech, Hungary and Romania to prevent land reclaims in the future.

The Manhattan Project was the most dramatic example, but throughout the war, basic scientific research played an increasing role in technological development. Also the introduction of the GI bill accelerated the spread of college education in the American population, and from there through the rest of the world.
