They were originally sent from an English trading company (Not Viriginia Trading Company) to find gold and large herds of local animals for fur trading. When initial testing revealed their was no gold and no large herds nearby, the Company went bankrupt and had no way to survive unless they sold their land.

Thus the Virginia Trading Company purchases the land that Jamestown was located and began shipping back agricultural goods to England with plans to create a more inland Colony. That was until a settler began growing tobacco.

Nobody knew how the Jamestown settlers acquired the exact breed of tobacco that was pleasant to smoke as the Spanish Monarchy had rights given to them by the Vatican and Catholic Church and were the only ones permitted to grow the plant. No matter how they got it, American Tobacco not Gold and Furs, flooded London and other Northern European Ports and Cities and this angered the Spanish Government, who attempted to seize the colony, yet could not locate it.

This prompted the English government to assist the colony and Jamestown began to make defenses and grow in size. Long story short, jobless people with no hope in Europe wishing to escape the political and economic problems who couldn't find gold in America but could grow plants and brought European Economics into the New World...

The settlers were looking for gold. They hoped to repeat the success of the Spaniards who found gold in South America. They were told by the investors that if they didn't generate any wealth from the settlement that financial support for their efforts would end, so they spent much of their time searching and little time actually cultivating the land. They soon found that tobacco growing would be a good idea. Problems developed when they took too much Native Tribe land.
