Why was New York formed?

First of all, it was the Dutch, not the English, and they founded New Amsterdam. It was and still is a good place for a port city, and it grew very well. The Settlers even built a wall to keep out invaders, and later, the Street that was built along that path was called Wall Street. In the 1660's, the Dutch came to be ruled by a man everyone hated and who treated the colony very badly. The English who had colonized the rest of the coast, were tired of the Dutch cutting into their profits. An English Naval task force approached the city, and the Dutch welcomed them as liberators, the hated Governor was killed, and the city was taken without a shot being fired, and renamed New York.

For this reason, the Dutch never considered themselves to be conquered, reflecting the rebellious and liberal attitude the Dutch have been known to show. To this day the so-called "New York Accent" is originally native Dutch mixed with English, and New Yorkers still have that liberal attitude they inherited from the original Dutch Settlers.
