The USSR's satellites were the socialist countries of Eastern Europe whose governments supported USSR's policy: Albania, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, GDR, Hungary. These countries were the members of The Warsaw Pact and of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance.

The membership in this club was not entirely voluntary. When Hungary tried to leave the Soviet orbit in 1956, and when Czechoslovakia tried to liberalize its political system in 1968, the Soviets invaded with tanks and put down the "rebellions." Although Albania withdrew in 1968 after the Sino-Soviet split, it remained a communist (albeit Maoist) state.

Eastern Europe. The six other nations of the Warsaw Pact (East Germany, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Romania) were Soviet satellite nations. The Soviet Union had relationships with other communist countries around the world, but these were not satellites in the Soviet orbit as were the Warsaw Pact nations.
