In Europe the Invasion of Poland since that effectively started the European conflict, Kursk because it halted Germanys Eastward advance, the Defense of Stalingrad because it destroyed much of Germanys manpower and weaponry, the Normandy Invasion because it operned a second front and the Battle of Berlin because it ends the European War. Those are all ground battles, many of which would never been possible without the prior success in a long running naval conflict called the Battle of the Atlantic, and an air duel called the Battle of Britain.

In the Pacific the list begins with the opening at Pearl Harbor and the fall of Singapore. Guadalcanal starts the long road back and Midway is the turning point. The final curtain comes down with the Battle of Okinawa. Again the long sea battle to keep the shipping lanes open and the extensive air war made the significant battles possible.

Another perspective:

1. The dropping of the Atomic Bombs. Hiroshima & Nagasaki.

2. Stalingrad. The limit of German penetration of the USSR.

3. Alamein. The limit of German penetration in Africa.

4. Midway. Proof that the US Carrier Fleet in the Pacific could dominate the Japanese maritime threat.

5. Lend/Lease. Britain had to be able to maintain the importation of food & war materiel.

6. The Battle of Britain. The first conclusive defeat of Axis power.

7. D Day. It remains the largest amphibious action in history.

8. Kursk. A massive armoured conflict.

9. The Battle of the Bulge. Hitlers final throw of the dice.

10. Pearl Harbor. The start of the Pacific war.

___

Stalingrad should definitely be included. After that, Germany had no serious hope of winning the war, only of prolonging it.
