People had to work very long hours in dangerous, unhealthy conditions in order to make a living.
Industrial Revolution conditions were quite bad. Many people were needed to do work, and they didn't get payed as much. Small children were hired/used a lot since they could fit into machines and control the insides of it, although it lead to a lot of death and exhaustion. Many people went on strike as well.
Long hours (16 hour work days) seven days a week under dirty, unsafe, conditions. Lots of workers died because they were so exhausted they fell asleep and leaned into the unprotected flywheels or leatherbands operating huge machinery.
Child labor was the norm, and a lot of children died, were horribly injured, or caught lung diseases from breathing in soot, lint, sawdust, or other dust particles.
The factories were freezing in the winter and roasting in the summer.
The working 'class' were treated just like that, an expendable class of humans made to work in the dingy dangerous factories of laissez faire capitalism.
Factory conditions were dismal.

Factory discipline during the Industrial Revolution was characterized by strict rules, long working hours, and harsh punishments for infractions. Workers were expected to follow a regimented schedule and adhere to the authority of the factory owners and managers. This discipline was necessary to maintain productivity and control a large workforce, but it also resulted in exploitation and poor working conditions for many factory workers.
