At one time, 80% of Wisconsin was German. However the Swedes lived in Northern Door County, the Belgians lived in Southern Door County. Washington Island was the home of the Icelanders. People from Luxemburg moved to just north of Milwaukee. Some of the French fur traders stayed in the area sometimes marrying Native Americans. There were a number of Irish that came to Wisconsin to farm. The Cornish moved to the south western portion of the state where there was lead to mine near Dodgeville. The Welsh moved to southern Wisconsin to farm. There was a Swiss settlement in New Glarus. The Finns moved to northern Wisconsin. Many of the Irish also settled in Milwaukee but Milwaukee had so many Germans that there was a newspaper printed in German. The Danes lived in Racine and their kringle is famous.
