Answer
If you cannot afford to hire a professional exterminator, go to a home improvement or hardware store and ask someone who works there to show you which of the pest-control sprays or traps or other devices are safest for killing roaches in your type of home or apartment. It matters whether you have: pets, other residents (especially children or the elderly), and if you or anyone living there has special allergies to chemicals and such.
We haven't had roaches (yet), but we've had: a moth invasion; a carpenter-ant invasion; and a problem with fruit-flies and other flies indoors, and even mice -- plus huge bees, wasps, and hornets outdoors. It's not pleasant to deal with pests, but almost everyone does sooner or later.
Answer
Pyrethrum powder sprinkled around can be effective, but great care would need to be taken as it is poisonous to humans and animals as well.
Fresh cucumber peelings placed in cupboards and replaced when dry is a deterrent, as is highly scented talc powder sprinkled across their path.
