traditionally, flowers are given. White flowers in particular. However, flowers are normally only given by family at the funeral so it is generally considered polite practice to give a sympathy card and a donation to the family's choice of charity at the funeral/wake.

Make sure they eat and sleep.
Make sure that the everyday things get done, such as dealing with the routine bills and tradespeople.
They will be too grief stricken to want, or appreciate, a gift - but they will cherish the time you give them.

But even more meaningfully, a gift card for a meal with a note attached saying "Call me when you're ready, and we can go out for lunch" (or dinner), since one of the greatest difficulties (for those who have lost a loved one) lies in continuing to experience their other meaningful relationships/friendships.
