Check your tranny mount.
It could also be your front axles. Check your motor and tranny mounts first and make sure they arent loose or leaking any hydrolic fluid. Next would be the axles. Very common on the 1.8t! - Moustafa
drive shaft could be out of balance or tires could be out of round

Could it be the Neutral Safety Switch is out of alignment? Thinks Reverse is Neutral? I don't know Rovers, but there is a safety switch in vehicles with Automatic Transmissions, that prohibit the vehicle from being started in a Driver or Reverse gear.
when the quad is in neutral yes.
Are you in neutral ? No in reverse.
Park , Reverse , Neutral , Drive , Low
well it depends if your wanting to go backwards then you put the car in reverse . or if your wanting to stop then you put the car on neutral.
A car without a reverse or neutral gear needs a transmission overhaul. It is possibly due to improper fluid levels, or broken gears inside the transmission itself.
