What would you recommend for a laptop solaris or unix please give reasons?

Solaris is design for servers and linux is for desktop and can also be run on servers. Solaris has a Hardware Comapatibility issues on x86 or desktop PC's. While mostly linux like ubuntu runs almost all desktop even in lowest PC's. Try Ubuntu. but the new Open Solaris which is new is based on Unix SOlaris and can run on Desktop PC's.
