Mendeleev first created the Periodic Table in 1869.

He thought that the elements must be organised in some way, that we would be able to use for experiments. And he first thought of the periodic table. He tried and tried but could not get them all to fit. He stayed up for hours, until finally giving up late at night. But when he went to bed, he did not know that just hours later, he would make one of the biggest discoveries yet...

He went to bed and dreamed about the periodic table. Then, he dreamt of one only possible way too make the elements fit together. He suddenly woke up, and put all his cards in place, and the periodic table was made.

A paper just published (5 April 2010) in Physical Review Letters by Yu. Ts. Oganessian and others claims the synthesis of a new element with atomic number 117. The abstract states "The discovery of a new chemical element with atomic number Z=117 is reported. The isotopes 293117 and 294117 were produced in fusion reactions between 48Ca and 249Bk. Decay chains involving eleven new nuclei were identified by means of the Dubna Gas Filled Recoil Separator. The measured decay properties show a strong rise of stability for heavier isotopes with Z>=111, validating the concept of the long sought island of enhanced stability for super-heavy nuclei."

In 1869.

On 6 March 1869, Mendeleev made a formal presentation to the Russian Chemical Society, entitled The Dependence between the Properties of the Atomic Weights of the Elements, which described elements according to both atomic weight and valence.

The first periodic table was devised by Mendeleev and published in 1869. No doubt he spent some time on his thesis prior to publishing.

Who is the inventor of the periodic table?

Dmitri Mendeleev is generally credited, as he was able to predict the properties of elements which had not yet been discovered based on 'gaps' in his table. He ordered the known elements in terms of their atomic mass in 1869; elements are listed in order of increasing atomic number in the modern version.
