∙ 11y agoT.Marshall did not invent the "fire extinguisher" you're familiar with. His patent, issued in 1872 called the invention a "fire extinguisher", but it was little more than an improved way to get high-pressure water from pipes in the street into buildings where valves could be opened to spray water on a fire.
It was certainly not a "portable fire extinguisher", which had been invented a very long time before T.Marshal came along.

A Thomas J. Martin was issued a patent in 1872 for an invention he CALLED a "fire extinguisher", but it was NOTHING like a portable fire extinguisher. It was a systems of pressurized pipes for spraying water inside large buildings, drawing upon water pressure in pipes in the streets.
