The first Music Cassettes (Musicassettes) were introduced in the U.S. in Sept. 1966 by The Mercury Record Company - a U.S. affiliate of Philips.

Popular almost immediately after introduction, & making it "easy" to listen to what you wanted to, instead of just what was on the radio, the 8-track cartridge could be portable also. Widely used throughout the '70's, and replaced swiftly by the smaller, more user-friendly, "cassette"tape by the end of the decade, they were used for almost any media from the period, and could be purchased with any number of different entertainments on them, & at bargain prices, well into the '80's at many retailers.
