What year did electricity reach suburban homes? |
Electricity in suburban homes
This varied from country to country and from town to town. Initially, electricity was used mainly for street lighting, for some industrial purposes, for hotels, restaurants, theatres, etc. Wiring an existing house was relatively expensive, unless the wires could run safely through existing gas pipes in the house.
In most of the more prosperous countries, new houses and appartments had electricity from about 1905 onwards (or somewhat earlier). In towns the main problem was with older houses, whether in the suburbs or closer to the centre. Some of these buildings didn't get electricity till the interwar period.
