Although the first patent that resembled a bar code was filed in 1952, the first barcode scanning equipment wasn't created in the lab until 1966, and commercially available until 1970. Without a standard as we know it today though, bar codes were not adopted. In 1973 George Laurer invented the UPC Bar Code system, which is still used in the United States today. On June 26, 1974, the first grocery store to have bar code reading equipment went online in Ohio. The first item scanned was a 10-pack of Wrigley's Fruit Juice gum.

The industrial use of bar codes can be traced back as far as the 1960s, in some cases as a means to identify railroad cars. Common linear bar codes started appearing on grocery shelves in the early 1970s as the UPC (Universal Product Code) bar code to automate the process of identifying grocery items.
