14. Ripken Becomes New Ironman (September 6, 1995) When the third out was recorded in the top of the fifth inning in a contest between Baltimore and the California Angels, the game became official. Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. had played in a major league record 2131 consecutive games, moving Lou Gehrig - the "Iron Horse" who played for the New York Yankees from 1925 to 1939 - into second place on baseball's endurance list.
