Throughout history, California has been held by many different groups, including Native Americans, Europeans like the Spanish, Mexicans, and finally, with its admission to the Union, it gained United States statehood. Its isolation, thanks to the Pacific Ocean and mountains and deserts surrounding it, caused the Native Californians to develop different rituals and traditions than many other Native American peoples throughout the rest of North America. The Spanish were the first Europeans to encounter these people when they arrived in California, and after initial explorations, they left the area alone for over 200 years, until missions were established in 1769. When Mexico gained independence from Spain, they also gained the territory of California, and began developing ranchos in the area. These ranchos were worked mainly by Mission Indians, and the developers did very little manual work. 1825 brought with it a wave of disease, which coupled with abuse from their superiors, began to wipe out the Mission Indian population. This wipeout began to ruin the Californian rancho economy. This ruin would not last long, however, as 1844 brought with it the creation of the California Trail, bringing settlers west and breaking up the isolation that California had experienced for centuries. The Mexican-American War broke out in 1846, and the California pueblos surrendered with no shots fired, placing the territory easily under American control, and the California Gold Rush, which began in 1848, brought the California non-Native population over 100,000, and it became the 31st state admitted to the Union in September of 1850.

The statehood of California was proclaimed in 1850 on the 9th September. Prior to 19th century many countries such as England and Russia established colonies in cali. The governance of Spanish started in 1697 and lasted till 1821. The independence of Mexico from Spain led to the end of Spanish era in the area. The colonization of Mexico started in 1821 and trades were enhanced. Changes happened in California such as the secularization of missions as well as the Immigration of non Mexicans in the area. United States announced a war with Mexico in 1846. Non-Mexican residents in California revolted against Mexican officials and military leaders on the 15th day of June 1846. It was a revolt which went for a period of one week and with the help of the US army interfering, the non mexican crowd got an upper hand and took control over the area.

California was first settled by the Chumash, Mohave, Yuma, Pomo, and Maidu tribes. The Spanish began to build missions in California in 1769. Mexico became independent of Spain in 1821. Some Mexicans began cattle ranching in California. Some Americans came to California in the 1840s. In 1846, John Fremont declared that California was independent and called it the Bear Flag Republic.

Also in 1846, James Knox Polk ordered the army into Mexico. The Mexican American War ended with the US taking much of the southwest including California. Then in 1848, gold was discovered. Many thousands came to mine gold hoping to get rich. California was important and populous enough to become a state.

Congress allowed California to become a state without passing the territorial stage. In 1850, California became a state as part of the Compromise of 1850. California entered as a free state not allowing slavery. So because of Millard Fillmore, Daniel Webster, Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas, California became a state on September 9, 1850.
