Esther became queen during the reign of Ahasuerus, also known as Xerxes I, who reigned 486-465BC. It is not possible to exactly know her birth and death dates, but this does place her in this time period.

A:

According to the Book of Esther, Esther was a young virgin chosen by King Xerxes to replace his first wife, Vashti. She was a Jew, but born in Persia.

.

There is no historical record of Esther or of her predecessor, Vashti, and Queen Amestris is accepted by historians as Xerxes' only wife for the first several years of his reign. On the historical evidence, Esther was only a literary creation and so we can not say where she came from as an actual person. The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls could indicate where the inspiration for Esther came from. There are enough parallels between the Book of Esther and the scroll fragments known as proto-Esther to suggest, but not prove, that Esther came as inspiration from the scroll, proto-Esther.

Historical Answer

According to the Book of Esther, Queen Esther lived in the Persian Court of King Xerxes. However, some scholars say that there are so many historical problems with the story that it is unlikely to be historically true, and that there was no Queen Esther.

Jewish Traditional Answer

Esther was in the city of Shushan (Persian: Susa, or Shush), the seat of the Persian monarchy, which is in present-day Iran, 250 km east of the Tigris river.

The Book of Esther tells the story of the salvation of Jewish community in Persia, and begins with Esther, the cousin and adopted daughter of Mordecai the Jew, becoming the king's new wife. The book describes the king of Persia as 'Ahasuerus'. Although there would be some historical inaccuracies, many Bible commentaries observe that Ahasuerus is likely the Hebraicised version of King Xerxes, who ruled from 486 to 465 BCE. Against this, Mordecai is identified as having been sent into exile by Nebuchadnezzar, who ruled Babylon ruled Babylon 605 to 561BCE - a century earlier. Giving primacy to the rule of Xerxes, we can say that Esther was portrayed as living between 486 and 465 BCE.
