Communications - The amplitude of a carrier wave is modulated by a data signal and transmitted, for example by radio wave. At the receiving end it is possible to demodulate the signal if the orignal carrier wave is known and retrieve the data signal

advantage of pulse code modulation is of two fold

first noise interference is completely eliminated when the signal level exceeds the value of 20db or more

second the signal can be received and retransmitted as many times as required without an introduction of distortion
