Answer:

Dinosaurs lived on Earth for over 160 million years, from the late Triassic period (about 230 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous period (about 65 million years ago). At the end of the Cretaceous an extinction event caused the death of most dinosaur species. Only birds, which evolved from theropod dinosaurs during the Jurassic period, survived until the present day.

The dinosaurs didn't suddenly "appear" on the earth. Animals evolved over millions of years to the point where they took the forms we are familiar with now as dinosaurs. The fossil record is clear in this. Smaller, less sophisticated creatures gave way to larger and more complex critters. Some 230 million years ago is the general time that paleontologists consider the dinosaur first appeared. Things rolled along until about 65 million years ago when the lights went out for the dinosaurs.

A link to the Wikipedia article on the dinosaur is provided.

Dinosaurs first appeared during the Triassic period, around 280 MYA (Million Years Ago), and died out around 65.5 MYA. They evolved from Archosaurs, or "Ruling Reptiles". It is still unknown why they died out.
