Stalin, Lenin, Ho Chi Minh are all totalitarianists with fake names. Pol Pot was influence by these preceding totalitarianists in many ways, one of these being the changing of his name. It was sort of a rite of passage for all totalitarian leaders, so change their names. He also did it for the sake of secrecy, which was one his biggest defenses against the "enemy."

He changed his name when he finally completely became in control of the Cambodian government. It reflected the pattern of Ho Chi Minh, Stalin, and Lenin, who were other communists. The changing of names was a sort of "rite of passage" for them. For Pol Pot it also ensured secrecy; one of his biggest defenses against the "enemies."
