When bringing home a new puppy why would an existing dog begin licking everything like pillows and couches? In: Dog Behavior |

Answer
It's no different than if you have a 3 year old and bring a new baby home. The child, in most cases will be a little jealous. You've had your dog for awhile and now you are bringing in a puppy and making a big, big fuss over it (easy to do I know.) When I introduced a new pup into our family (with an adult dog) I always took the time to spend a one-on-one time with my older pet. I would often take my adult dog for a fun walk on the dyke by the river for about 1/2 hour to an hour and it was just Daisy and me! LOL In time, if you continue this routine your adult dog will be fine. The dog is upset and that's why the licking of pillows, couches, etc. Please spend some time with the adult dog. Even if one of the kids in the family or your husband/wife could bond more with the adult dog this licking would stop.
Good luck Marcy

Jelousy maybe..... Marking Territory and letting the new guy know who's boss, i would think.
my five year old chihuahua does it religiously. i don't try to stop it because it's better than him pissin all over the house. you handle it however you want... just remember it's better than the alternative.
