When can a non-relative be claimed as a dependent?

A non-relative can be claimed under the following conditions. One, this person lived in your house for the entire year, except for specified temporary absences (such as medical care, military service, vacation, etc.). Two, this person's relationship to you didn't violate local law. If you live in a state that prohibits cohabitation, then you can't claim your girlfriend or boyfriend. Three, this person had gross income of less than $3,650 for 2009. Four, you provided over half of this person's support for the year.
