While some free black men could vote in some of the northern states before the US Civil War, the right to vote was guaranteed to all black males with the ratification of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution in 1870.

Black women gained the vote with white women. A few western states granted women the vote in the late 19th century, but most women in the US gained the vote with ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920
