St. Patrick's day was first celebrated in the U.S. in Boston in 1737. It was and is a Catholic Holy Day.
According to legend, St. Patrick lead all of the snakes out of Ireland. A day was created in honor of this supposed feat.

St. Patrick's Day was originally a Christian feast day celebrated only in Ireland. The day, March 17th, is recognized as the death of St. Patrick (his ascending into heaven) and people celebrated him by feasting. It would later travel to the United States during the Revolutionary War via Irish immigrants.

But it was not until 1737 that the immigrants really celebrated the st Patrick Day. And It was in Boston where the Day was first celebrated in a public way. Gradually other states took it up. And it was New York that took out the largest ever St Patrick' s Day parade. Held since 1762,
