The British Government establishes rule over India (establishes the Raj)

This period of British rule is often referred to as the Raj. This was because the Company controlled most of India by 1858, the India Act effectively transferred that control to the British crown. Throughout the British colonization, tensions ran high between the European power and the conquered Asian nation. Great Britain took taxes that stifled Indian industrial and commercial growth to gain more prosperity. (ben10million)

Answer India became a British colony in the latter half of the 18th century. The British rule lasted for 150 years, when on the 15th of August, 1947, after years of struggle and valiant freedom battles, India was declared independent. Answer The effective date which most people recognise is the 23rd June 1757 when an East Indian Company Army defeated the Nawab of Bengal and his French allies at the Battle of Plassey. The battle took place between 2,500 British and Indian troops and 5,000 from the Nawabs Army (although he had 50,000 troops at his command). Colonel Robert Clive led the British Forces (later to be known as Clive of India). Although the company had traded and founded presidency towns such as Calcutta prior to this, the battle marked the expansion into administration as well as trading by the company into India which continued until the company handed control directly to the British government to be administered as a colony after the events of the mutiny/rebellion in 1857 (see related questions).

Britain did not invade India. Ever. Colonies were established by East India Company, just like the French and Dutch companies. Internal battles were fought between the French, British and Dutch and so on because the European powers wanted to destroy each other. Due to an attack by the Mughal King, or the Indian King before the British, the East India Company asked the British Government to help them. Because the British Government gained much money from the trade in India, they supported the company, and eventually took over the company all together. This then started the British rule in India, and as trade expanded as they explored new lands, so did the empire in India. This eventually became the Raj and so forth.

There was never an invasion.
British invaded India in 1803.
