Confederate General Simon Bolivar graduated from West point in 1844. Among the 25 graduating cadets of that year, Bolivar ranked eleventh. Bolivar saw most of his action in the Western Theater. He fought under General Braxton Bragg at the Battle of Perryville.
On Feb.16,1862, Fort Donelson fell when the Confederate Army under Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner surrendered to Grant's Union Army.

Lt. Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner was the son of a Confederate General who commanded American/Canadian forces during the Aluetians campaign during WWII. He later commanded the 10th Army during the battle for Okinawa, and became the highest-ranking American officer killed in battle during WWII. He was the architect of the first mass military airlift in history, (the Nome airlift).

The Battle of Fort Donelson is tied to the nickname of "Unconditional Surrender Grant", gained by general Grant, the victor of the battle. When asked by the Confederate commander, General Simon Bolivar Buckner what the surrender conditions would have been, answered: " Unconditional surrender; I'm about to move against your positions".

He had been offered a high rank in the Union army but chose to side with the South. Buckner was vilified by the Northern press and all his property was confiscated because he chose to join the Rebel army.

General Grant was the 18th President of the United States, serving two terms from 1869 to 1877. He was a prominent military commander during the American Civil War, credited with leading the Union Army to victory. His nickname was "Unconditional Surrender" Grant, which he gained after demanding unconditional surrender from Confederate General Simon Bolivar Buckner during the Battle of Fort Donelson.
About the only campaign in the North Pacific was in the Aleutian Islands, part of Alaska, then still a US Territory and not yet a state. Lieutenant General Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr. was commanding the Alaska Defense Command when the Japanese invaded and captured two of the Aleutian Islands, Attu and Kiska, as a diversion for their attack on Midway. Buckner also was in command when the islands were recaptured. The main force Buckner had was the US 7th Infantry Division, which at the time was under the command of Major General Eugene M. Landrum. Novelist James Jones, who wrote "From Here To Eternity" after the war served with the US 7th ID. Buckner went on to command the US 10th Army at Okinawa. On June 18, 1945 he was killed by Japanese artillery fire. He was one of the two highest ranking Americans to die in the war, and the only one killed by the enemy. Buckner was the son of Confederate General Simon Bolivar Buckner, Sr., best remembered today for surrendering Fort Donelson to U. S. Grant. This was the occasion when Grant earned the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant, for the terms he offered his old friend Buckner. This was the first time the two had seen each other since they were stationed together in San Francisco before the Civil War, and Buckner loaned Grant the money (several hundred dollars - a substantial sum in those days) to get home on when Grant was forced to resign from the Army in disgrace for drunkenness. There is no record that Grant ever repaid Buckner, Sr. for the loan.
James Longstreet held the rank of major general in the Confederate army. He graduated 54th in the West Point class of 1842.
