During the early 1970's to 1984, the Sesame Street cast just used an extra red puppet without really any personality. It wasn't until 1985 when Kevin Clash made Elmo and gave Elmo energy and personality.

when elmo came to sesame street he was the same appearance wise but he was net the elmo we come to love today he was more like a caveman and he always wanted to smash eventually they did not want to even have him on the set because he was not popular but eventually Kevin Jeffrey Clash was inspired my the love of his hometown and he decided to make elmo stand for love he pitched it to the producers and they wanted to try it out and the public loved it and elmo stuck

The puppet that eventually became Elmo was around since the early 1970's however, he made his debut officially named Elmo in November 1985.
