Islam came to the Caribbean after the abolition of slavery by the European powers in 1834. With the freeing of the African slaves, new labor was needed to tend to the sugar plantations throughout the region. The British imported migrant workers from India (at that time including what is now Pakistan with it's Moslem population) and the Dutch imported labor from the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). In the British West Indies Islam was of small importance as most of the migrant workers were Hindu. On the Dutch Islands and in Suriname the Islamic influence was more pronounced.
Islam came to the British Caribbean as a direct result of the migration of South West Asian labor into that region following the Abolition of Slavery in 1834. In the Dutch West Indies Islam came with the migration of laborers from the East Indies (now Indonesia). These migrations also brought their unique cuisine (curries and rijstaffels) and ganja to the Caribbean.
