Kit Carson first entered the western side of what is now the state of Nevada on his journey southward as guide to the Fremont expedition in 1843. The party went southeast after an attack by Modocs near Klamath Lake, wintered in the Sierra Nevada, crossed the Mohave Desert, stopped at the fort in Las Vegas, then continued northeast to Bent's Fort. Carson joined the next Fremont expedition which followed the Humboldt River to Sutter's Fort in 1845. The popular report of that trip was published by Congress, making Carson famous and fostering use of the California Trail by pioneer emigrants to California.
